Text: A manuscript of the textbook Martin Buntinas
& Gerald M. Funk, Applied Statistics for Science, (Spring 2003
edition), and other materials are available from the departmental office ($30).
If you want to refer to an alternative text, I recommend Probability and
Statistical Inference, by R. Hogg & E. Tanis, MacMillan Press. I will
refer to an anthology of statistic articles in Statistics: A Guide to the
Unknown (3rd ed.), Tanur &al, Duxbury (1989). These two books are
available in the library.
Grading: The course grade will be computed using the
weighted average of the following:
Quiz 1 |
Thu Feb 13 |
12.5% |
MidTermXam |
Thu March 13 |
25% |
Quiz 2 |
Thu April 10 |
12.5% |
FinalXam |
Tue May 6 at |
25% |
Homework, Lab |
Before midsemester |
12.5% |
Homework, Lab |
After midsemester |
12.5% |
Cutoff grades: A 90%, B+ 88%, B 80%, C+
78%, C 70%, D+ 68%, D 60%.
Make-ups:
The Quiz 1 score will be raised to the grade of MidTermXam, if the latter is
higher; and the Quiz 2 score will be raised to the grade of FinalXam, if the
latter is higher. In this sense, quiz scores are unofficial. Hence there will be no make-up
quizzes. A make-up for MidTermXam
will be given only in case of an illness verified by a note from a physician or
a death in your family. If you
miss the MidTermXam for any other reason, it will be given the grade of the
FinalXam. The FinalXam is very
final; if you miss that, a make-up is given only with approval of your dean
(and it is granted only for documented serious reasons).
Academic Honesty: It is presumed that you
will do your own work on the homework and tests. Discussing homework problems
with others is encouraged but submitting work as your own which is copied or
paraphrased from someone else in not permitted. Cheating includes, but is not
limited to, illegal collaboration, copying, using materials not permitted on
tests, and aiding others on tests. Anyone found cheating will not be permitted
to withdraw and will receive a grade of F for the course. Your academic dean
will be informed and a statement will be placed in your permanent file. If you discuss
homework with someone else, you must cite the person’s name on your homework
paper.
Miscellaneous: A standard course in
calculus is assumed in this statistics course. REVIEW YOUR CALCULUS NOW.
The last day to withdraw with a grade of W is Monday March 24 at
The last day of class is Thursday April 24.
Mon&Tue April 28&29 are study days.
The final exam is on Tuesday May 6 at
ERRORS FOUND IN TEXT
SPRING 2003
The textbook for
the course was printed in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.
It is being sold by the Department for $30.00. The price was calculated to
cover the material and labor for photocopying and assembling the book.
You may purchase
the book from the department secretary. Payments may be in CASH or CHECK. If
you pay by check, make it payable to Loyola University Chicago.
For this semester
only, you can reduce the cost of the book as much as 50% by the following:
The amount of $1 is paid for each error found in the
text;
Only one payment is made for each error (to the first person reporting
it);
Maximum of $15 per person;
Each error is recorded, with the student's name, in my master copy;
I will try to carry around a bunch of $1 bills to class.
