Assignment

Chose a topic related to statistics and medical ethics (very widely defined) of interest to you.  You are to write a research paper on your topic, meaning that you should ideally included several sources of information including opposing point(s) of view.  Papers should be typed, approximately 8-10 pages in length (double spaced, size 11 or 12 font).  Students are encouraged to meet with Dr. O’Brien should questions develop.

Due Dates

  1. Your topic – On a single sheet of paper, write or type a one- or two-paragraph description of the topic you wish to explore for your paper and turn it in at the start of class (1:40pm) on Wednesday, April 19th 2006.  In your write-up, include enough detail and examples to give a clear picture of the ideas you wish to address in your paper.

  1. Your paper – Hand-deliver your paper to Professor O’Brien by or before 12-noon on Saturday, May 6th 2006; copies of papers sent via e-mail will not be accepted.

Assessment

Grading will be based on writing style, correct use of grammar and transitions from point to point, as well as adequate breadth and depth of the relevant issues.

Academic Honesty

It is presumed and required that students do their own work for the Final Paper.  Cheating includes, but is not limited to, illegal collaboration, copying, using un-referenced materials and plagiarizing material for the course paper.  Anyone found cheating will not be permitted to withdraw and will receive an “F” grade for the course.  Your academic dean will be informed and a statement will be placed in your permanent file.
